I'm sure everyone has heard people say "use a reusable water bottle!" Of course, it makes sense to use one. It reduces your plastic consumption, prevents bottle caps and rings from choking wildlife, and reduces the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean.
But how much do you actually save with a reusable water bottle?
When you use a plastic water bottle, you are contributing to the 70+ million water bottles that are thrown away in the U.S. every day. That's more than 2.555 billion water bottles per year. If you made each water bottle equal to a 0.2 g BB pellet, the total weight of plastic bottles thrown away each year in the U.S. would be more than 70 times the weight of the Space Shuttle. And that's only the U.S.
Economically, you would save a whole lot of money. The average American spends about $5 per week on plastic water bottles. One person can save $260 dollars per year if they switch to reusable water bottles. If one person switches to reusable water bottles, about 217 plastic water bottles will be eliminated.
So your challenge for today is: Bring a reusable water bottle with you.
Whether it's to school or work, there are water fountains everywhere for you to refill your water bottle if you have to. Just make sure that you don't use any plastic water bottles for the day.
Make sure you go to the event page for this challenge and click the "complete" button to check-in. Don't forget that you have the opportunity to win prizes the more days that you complete!
Live Green!
Done! I've done this daily for decades. Thanks for encouraging others to do the same!
